WHAT'S NEW

Previous DTC Updates:

DTC Demolition Begins (7/30/04)

On Friday, July 30, 2004, construction workers began removing the first of several buildings on California Street between Channel Street and Weber Avenue.  This is the first step in the construction process for the DTC, which will serve as RTD’s main transfer hub in downtown Stockton.  The DTC will occupy the block bordered by Weber Avenue and California, Channel, and Sutter Streets.

The removal of these buildings will facilitate the first phase of construction of the tarmac that will serve as the staging area for RTD’s buses.  This first phase will alleviate some of the bus and passenger traffic on Channel and Sutter Streets.  Passenger boarding and deboarding adjacent to the DTC site initially will not be affected.

DTC Groundbreaking (10/10/03)

On Friday, October 10, 2003, the San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD) hosted the Downtown Transit Center (DTC) Groundbreaking Ceremony on the southeast corner of Channel and Sutter Streets in downtown Stockton. RTD is pleased to have taken this next major step toward the fulfillment of the Downtown Transit Center project.

Elected officials, community representatives, current and past RTD Board members, and RTD executive staff help break ground for the new Downtown Transit Center.

Douglass Wilhoit, CEO, Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce; Stockton Mayor Gary Podesto; Stephen Mikesell, State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO), Office of Historic Preservation, Department of Parks & Recreation; California State Assemblymember Alan Nakanishi; California State Assemblymember Barbara Matthews; Leslie Rogers, Regional Administrator, Federal Transit Administration; U.S. Representative Dennis Cardoza; and U.S. Representative Richard Pombo were keynote speakers. Attendees included many city and county officials and staff, representatives from local transit agencies, and those who had a hand in making the Downtown Transit Center Groundbreaking become a reality.

The District was pleased to share this special occasion with its partners and is anticipating an exciting future as the Downtown Transit Center begins to take form.

What people are saying about the DTC:

Richard Pombo, U.S. Representative, 11th District
"The Transit Center is a key component in creating a seamless form of transportation that gets people from where they live to where they need to be whether work, school, or doctor appointments. And it will create more jobs throughout the County in construction and commercial tenant space."

Dennis Cardoza, U.S. Representative, 18th District
"As the Valley continues to grow, it is crucial that we facilitate the development of public transportation. The transit center goes a long way toward that goal, and it is a significant step forward in the revitalization of downtown Stockton."

Gary Podesto, Mayor, City of Stockton
"This is an exciting time for downtown Stockton. The much anticipated Downtown Transit Center is one more project that will further the revitalization efforts."

Floyd H. Weaver, Chair, RTD Board of Directors
"This truly will be the hub of the city of Stockton. It is a project that will serve not only the county, but also the citizens who come into Stockton and use transit. I'm just as proud as I can be of everything that has happened."

Donna Kelsay, General Manager/CEO, RTD
"This is an important transportation milestone for the residents of Stockton and San Joaquin County. The beautiful new downtown transit hub is also a significant element of the revitalization of downtown Stockton. It is fitting at this time to remember the foresight and commitment of the late Jerald Hughes, the General Manager of San Joaquin RTD from 1990 until his death in September 2001. Jerry's tireless efforts made it possible for us to celebrate the realization of this long-standing vision."

Manual Laguna, Downtown Stockton Alliance Guide:
"A lot of small businesses are looking forward to it. It's a good thing. This is the right location."
